Presupposition: Virtually all employees want to perform well and to do an excellent job. That being the case, when excellence is not present, the accountability must lie largely with management. The role of management in simple but profound terms is to assure the following three things:
Know exactly what is expected of subordinates.
Communicate those expectations to subordinates. ("communicate" not "tell")
Spend all their remaining time assisting subordinates.
Excellence in such a management style will result in effective teams which accomplish more than the sum of what the individuals could do alone. Morale is very high and competitors are frustrated.
Three primary accountabilities of management are:
Quality/Excellence in every aspect of the business.
Fairness in all interactions with customers, employees, suppliers, and all who come in contact with the business.
Safety for all human life. These ideals can most easily be accomplished in a Principles-Based Leadership methodology. When properly and consistently applied, such an approach results in Total Corporate Fitness.
